Geocities Shuts Down October 26, 2009.

Search engine giant Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) announced Friday on the GeoCities website (geocities.yahoo.com) that it will close the free hosting service on October 26, 2009.

The company wrote this note on the GeoCities website Thursday: "GeoCities is closing on October 26, 2009. On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files."

The company first revealed in April that it would be closing the GeoCities service, promising to share more details in the summer. Acquired by Yahoo for $2.87 billion in 1999, the service was one of the most popular free web hosting services in the late 90s through the early 2000's. The service gradually declined in popularity with the emergence of social media services such as Flickr and Facebook. In Yahoo's Help section, the company explains why it is terminating the service and suggests current GeoCities users to migrate to its Yahoo Web Hosting service.

Corporate News

From the President's Report of the April 2009 Board Meeting:
"Society Webminister's Handbook (March 2009) - The Society Webminister's Handbook was approved, although implementation of that handbook is at the pleasure of the new Society Webminister."

The current society webminister Kevon Houghton (Thomas Edward Dudley) has resigned, and Jason Lantrip (Kieran Blake) has been been selected to fill the position of Interim Society Webminister until a replacement can be selected, effective immediately.

I wonder what the status of the newly approved handbook is if it's "at the pleasure" of the new Society Webminister. And is it at the pleasure of the interim webminister, or the new webminister who will take months to be found and accepted officially by the board?

CSS3

A fellow web designer just showed me this great website, CSS3 Preview. They took the new features of the upcoming CSS3 and created images of the things we'll be able to do once browsers are css3 compatible, including creating Shadows on Words with just a short, easy line of code, instead of creating a image every time we want some text to have some extra depth.

For those unfamiliar with CSS, it stands for Cascading Style Sheets, and is a newer, better way of creating websites, more easily than with just straight HTML and tables. Free CSS is a good website to take a look at for tutorials, information and free templates if you're interested.

Welcome to Webministers!

I created this Community in order to encourage well made, content rich web sites in the SCA.

Whether you are your group's official Webminister or just a member with an interest in creating a website for yourself or your hobbies, this is the place to come show your websites, share finds and information, discuss related topics, and request help with design and layout.

I look forward to this being a place where Webministers get together and talk with their fellow website designers in a friendly, helpful environment.
